KEOLIS COMPLETES OVER 125 COMMUTER RAIL INFRASTRUCTURE PROJECTS IN 2024

17 miles of rail and 18,000 ties replaced, along with accessibility improvements in partnership with MBTA

January 10, 2025 (BOSTON, MA) – Keolis Commuter Services (Keolis), the operating and maintenance partner for the MBTA Commuter Rail, has completed over 125 capital infrastructure projects throughout the system as the construction season slows for the winter. 17 miles of rail were completely replaced, double the normal amount typically replaced in a year. This includes upgrading 9 miles of some of the oldest rail in the network between Reading and Boston on the Haverhill Line. This section of rail -- before being replaced with continuous welded rail -- also served as the last remaining jointed rail on the Commuter Rail network. This change improves overall reliability and provides a smoother ride for passengers.

18,000 railroad ties, the wooden supports for rails, were also replaced throughout the system. This work ensures that trains can run safely and reliably, with minimal delays.

In addition, crews began construction of accessible mini-high level boarding platforms at several stations including Wellesley Square, West Medford, Walpole, and Franklin. These platforms allow anyone with a mobility device or stroller to board trains without using stairs.

“Each year, Keolis partners with the MBTA to complete critical construction and maintenance work throughout the Commuter Rail system,” said Abdellah Chajai, General Manager and CEO of Keolis. “This work ensures that the system stays up to date and service continues to be safe and reliable. I want to thank all of the Keolis crews that worked diligently to ensure all of these important projects were completed.”

Keolis and the MBTA also piloted a new laser train this fall to help clear the rails of sticky debris from leaves. Known as slippery rail, this condition forces trains to slow down and apply the brakes sooner, which impacts service. The laser train helped keep service running reliably throughout the season.

Keolis Commuter Services has marked its tenth year operating and maintaining the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority’s commuter rail system, the fifth largest commuter rail operation in North America. KCS is a subsidiary of Keolis North America (KNA), both headquartered in Boston, and employs approximately 2,400 people throughout the region. KCS and KNA are part of Keolis Group, an innovative global leader in transit services with more than a century of passenger transportation experience and operations in 13 countries.
