COMMUTER RAIL TO OPERATE A MODIFIED SEVERE WEATHER SCHEDULE FOR THE FALL RIVER/NEW BEDFORD LINE ON MONDAY
Planned service changes will improve reliability for passengers after additional snowfall and with continued extreme cold
February 1, 2026 (BOSTON) – The MBTA and Keolis Commuter Services (Keolis), the MBTA’s operations and maintenance partner for Commuter Rail, announced today that the Fall River/New Bedford Commuter Rail Line will operate on modified severe weather schedule on Monday, February 2, following additional snowfall on the South Coast and with continued extreme cold. The modified schedule can be viewed online.
The MBTA and Keolis closely monitor weather forecasts to assess expected and real-time conditions related to scheduled service and operations. Reduced service due to weather conditions is designed to meet ridership demand and provide travel options to essential workers while limiting the exposure of Commuter Rail trains to storm conditions and providing adequate access to storm clean-up crews. Passengers should plan extra time for their travel and use caution on platforms, in parking lots, and when boarding or exiting a train.
MBTA and Keolis personnel will be deployed across the Commuter Rail network to apply sand and salt to passenger areas, clear snow, and respond to incidents that may occur during the storm, such as downed trees. Crews will be pre-positioned at key facilities and infrastructure (switches, signals, etc.) to help ensure safe operations. To mitigate the risk of potential power outages, generators are also in place at key locations across the network. Switch heaters and snow jets will also be activated in critical areas as snow and ice begin to accumulate to ensure normal flow of train traffic.
Riders are encouraged to subscribe to T-Alerts , download the MBTA Go app, and follow the MBTA on X @MBTA, @MBTA_CR, and @MBTA_CR_Alerts for up-to-date service information on individual trains.
