COMMUTER RAIL ANNOUNCES FALL/WINTER SCHEDULE TO TAKE EFFECT NOVEMBER 18
Minor time adjustments in anticipation of fall/winter weather and for construction projects
November 8, 2024 (BOSTON) - The MBTA and Keolis Commuter Services (Keolis), the agency’s operating partner for Commuter Rail, have announced the new Fall/Winter schedule which will take effect on November 18. Schedules for all lines are available online at mbta.com/cr. The Fall/Winter schedule maintains consistent service throughout the day, late at night, and on weekends. Minor adjustments have been made to accommodate construction activity and to allow for fall/winter weather conditions.
“We’re pleased to continue to offer frequent Regional Rail-style service for Commuter Rail passengers this fall and winter,” said MBTA General Manager and CEO Phillip Eng. “With our operating partners at Keolis, these schedules have been developed to accommodate passengers and commuters traveling any time of day or during the weekend during this cold-weather time of year. We hope members of the public consider leaving their cars at home this season and make the Commuter Rail their preferred mode of travel.”
“We’re pleased to continue offering passengers consistent, all-day service on the Commuter Rail as ridership approaches pre-pandemic levels,” said Abdellah Chajai, CEO and General Manager of Keolis Commuter Services. “It has never been easier or more convenient to leave your car behind and just take the train”
The Mass by Train website has itineraries, trip ideas, and information about riding the Commuter Rail to destinations across Eastern Massachusetts and Rhode Island.
Passengers on midday Lowell Line trains will see an adjusted schedule to support the ongoing fiber optic project and several bridge replacement projects. Midday train schedules on the Framingham/Worcester Line will also be adjusted to accommodate several construction projects along that line.
Additional schedule adjustments are required for operational changes related to weather considerations for this time of year. Each autumn, falling leaves on the tracks are crushed under train wheels leaving behind a slick film that can create slippery conditions. To ensure safety in these conditions, locomotive engineers accelerate more slowly and apply the brakes earlier. As a result, minor schedule adjustments are needed to accommodate these operational requirements.
Keolis Commuter Services has marked its tenth year operating and maintaining the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority’s commuter rail system, the fifth largest commuter rail operation in North America. KCS is a subsidiary of Keolis North America (KNA), both headquartered in Boston, and employs approximately 2,400 people throughout the region. KCS and KNA are part of Keolis Group, an innovative global leader in transit services with more than a century of passenger transportation experience and operations in 13 countries.
